Lunar Phases Explained: What New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter Mean

The Moon goes through four main phases which are the New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, and Last Quarter. Each of these lunar phases carries symbolic meanings related to potential, action, revelation, and release. The New Moon represents beginnings while the Full Moon signifies culmination and awareness. The First Quarter often involves challenges, motivating individuals to persist through obstacles.

The Moon goes through a cycle that repeats each month. It changes how it looks as it orbits Earth. These changes are called lunar phases. In astronomy, the Moon isn’t really changing shape. What changes is how much of its day side we can see from Earth. But in spiritual traditions and astrology, each major phase of the Moon also comes with a symbolic meaning. There are four main phases: New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter. Each is a different phase in the lunar cycle and, in astrology, a different type of energy.

New Moon: The Beginning

The New Moon occurs when the Moon is close to the Sun, as seen from the Earth. The illuminated side of the Moon faces away from us, making it difficult or impossible to see.Astrologically, the New Moon represents potential, intention and beginnings. This is often seen as a good time to reflect on the projects you plan to start in the coming weeks. New Moon symbolism isn’t about expecting an immediate result; it’s about planting the first seed.It is a stage people use to set intentions, start a new routine or figure out the direction they want to take. The message is simple: you can prepare to begin an action without a visible final result.

First Quarter Moon: Action & Challenge

The First Quarter Moon is roughly one week after the New Moon. Half of the Moon is lit up. The Moon is about 90 degrees away from the Sun, in astronomical terms. In an astrological context, this phase represents action, effort, and overcoming resistance. The idea that started at the New Moon may need further development now. Things can go wrong; plans may need to be altered; decisions may have to be made.So this phase is more action than aspiration. The First Quarter Moon may represent a time when motivation is challenged. Persistence often is the answer to a real problem here.

Full Moon: Climax and Revelation

A full moon happens when the Earth is roughly between the Sun and the Moon and the side of the Moon facing Earth is lit up completely. In astrology, the Full Moon is a time of heightened emotion, revelation, awareness, and culmination.Something that began earlier in the lunar cycle may now be easier to see. This is why Full Moons are often associated with situations coming to a head, decisions being made and outcomes being delivered. In an astrological sense, the Sun and Moon are opposite each other, which can also bring more focus to relationships. The Full Moon does not always produce dramatic events. Symbolically, it’s more a question of seeing what has already been accomplished.

Last Quarter Moon: Letting Go and Adjustment

The Last Quarter Moon is also called the Third Quarter Moon. It happens about a week after the Full Moon . Again, half the Moon is lit , but this time the cycle is progressing toward completion, not expansion .This is a stage of release, reflection and correction in the astrological scheme. It can be a good time to ask what is no longer working.Sometimes it’s about reviewing decisions, clearing up unfinished business, and eliminating what’s no longer needed, rather than starting a new project. The next New Moon will mark a new cycle, and this phase is intended to help you acclimatise.
